An amazing father, mentor and a true friend

There are three charities we are supporting in memory of my father:

The Hop 50+ which was an absolute lifeline to him during his final years. They provided a friendly and safe space for him to go each day to receive good company, activities and lovely food. If ever I couldn’t find Dad I would look there first and usually find him happily having a cup of tea. They would occasionally call me if they were concerned about him which was a real comfort and support. They would let him eat and drink whatever he wanted each day and I settled up with them at the end of the month – small things like that make a big difference to someone with dementia as money and paying for things becomes confusing. The organisation is currently fundraising to survive during the pandemic.

The Alzheimer’s Society who sent the most helpful and supportive lady to visit Dad at home when he was first diagnosed. She offered support and advice that enabled Dad to remain independent at home for as long as possible and answered the many questions we had about the disease and medication options. She was also a lifeline for me when trying to support Dad and helped me make decisions when I felt I really wasn’t qualified to know what to do for the best.

The Salvation Army was a charity close to my father’s heart. As a child I remember he had a huge jar at home where he would throw his loose change. When the jar was full, he would take it down to the Salvation Army centre in Stockport. More recently the charity has supported me as they run the most wonderful twins group at their centre in Brighton. I knew each week I could go somewhere fun and safe with my twins and be surrounded by people who ‘got it’ regarding the challenges of being a twin mum.

Thank you so much for your support.
Ruth
